You’ll be part of a focused delivery team working on a national‑scale initiative to bring together collection metadata from multiple systems into one clear, trusted view. The goal is simple: make data easier to understand, easier to use, and reliable enough to support day‑to‑day decisions and long‑term planning.

This role suits someone who enjoys untangling complex data landscapes, building things that last, and working closely with analysts, architects, and business stakeholders.

What you will do

Design and shape data solutions
  • Build and maintain a scalable data warehouse that reflects real business rules, not just technical structures.
  • Design clear, well‑documented source‑to‑target mappings that stand up to scrutiny.
  • Improve and optimise existing data architecture so it performs well and is easy to maintain.

Move and prepare data
  • Develop and run ETL/ELT pipelines to bring metadata together from multiple systems into a single, reliable view.
  • Assess datasets, prioritise what matters, and prepare data for analytics and operational reporting.

Protect data quality and trust
  • Put practical data validation, cleansing, and governance processes in place.
  • Monitor data quality and deal with issues early, before they become reporting problems.
  • Work within government privacy, security, and compliance obligations.

Turn data into insight
  • Build Power BI reports and dashboards that tell a clear story and help people make informed decisions.
  • Work closely with analysts and users to make sure what you build actually answers their questions.

Work as part of the delivery team
  • Collaborate with project staff, technical specialists, and stakeholders to align on priorities and outcomes.
  • Contribute to backlog planning, testing, UAT support, and release activities.
  • Share knowledge, mentor others, and keep documentation clear and current.

Technologies you will work with
  • Microsoft Fabric (data loading, orchestration, warehouse and lakehouse design)
  • Power BI (data modelling, Power Query, DAX, reporting and visualisation)
  • Python (data processing, automation, and transformation)
  • PySpark and Pandas for large‑scale and structured data handling
  • Azure DevOps (Git repos, branching/merging, work items, deployment pipelines)
  • SQL for data validation, testing, and analysis
  • Cloud‑based data platforms with a focus on performance and cost awareness

You should have
  • Strong hands‑on experience as a Data Engineer working with modern cloud data platforms.
  • Proven experience designing and maintaining enterprise data warehouses and data models.
  • Solid understanding of data mapping, lineage, dependencies, and documentation.
  • At least 5 years’ experience with:
    • Power BI (data modelling, DAX, Power Query)
    • Python for data processing and automation
  • Production experience with Microsoft Fabric (mandatory).
  • Practical understanding of data quality, validation, cleansing, and governance frameworks.
  • Experience working in delivery teams with backlogs, testing cycles, and stakeholder sign‑off.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data topics to non‑technical audiences.

Nice to have
  • Certifications in Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Azure, Data Engineering, or Business Intelligence.
  • Experience working with metadata‑heavy or archival‑style datasets.
  • Familiarity with systems such as digital repositories or collection management platforms (helpful, not essential).
  • Exposure to government or regulated environments with strong data governance requirements.
  • A knack for turning messy, undocumented data into something clear, trusted, and usable.
